About VYT

"Volunteer Year Toronto" is our personal blog that highlights the ministry of Liebenzell Mission that enables youth from around the world to participate in transformational ministry opportunities when they volunteer a year of their lives to serve the needs of others. The Internatonal Student Volunteer Program (ISVP) described on these pages has been developed by Liebenzell Mission of Canada.

Through the International Student Internship Program countless lives are touched with the love of Christ through acts of service, love, and compassion. Refugees are provided shelter. Inner-city children are given hope. Children build life-long relationships through godly, Christian mentors. Church leaders are encouraged and blessed. Through ISVP youth from other countries come to give a year of their lives in selfless, volunteer service. They engage in transformational ministry opportunities that change their lives and the lives of those they serve. Liebenzell Mission of Canada coordinates the massive effort necessary to cross the administrative hurdles so that ministry in the Toronto area can happen.

We are Gregg and Donna Hanchett and will serve as Student Care Coordinators beginning in August 2010. We will be in Canada as Religious Workers. As Student Care Coordinators we will have a wide range of pastoral care duties to ensure a fruitful and successful spiritual experience for everyone involved. This coming year, youths will be placed in a variety of ministries from camp counselors and inner-city mentors to church youth group leaders and missionary childcare. Because of the wide variety of placements, we will be actively involved in providing pastoral care throughout the Toronto area.  Our duties would be:
  • Pastoral Care.  A ministry internship can challenge anyone, even energetic young people. On a daily basis they will be interacting with needy people by sharing Christ's love through words and action. We will make ourselves available in a pastoral role to help bring biblical perspective into their lives and perhaps turn a stressful situation into a blessing and give opportunity for personal growth.
  • Supporting Evangelism in the greater Toronto area. Our ultimate goal is to see the transformation of lives through the Christian faith. We believe that there is no more powerful means of advancing a society than through individual lives transformed by the radical love expressed in the words, actions, and authority of Jesus Christ.
  • Liaison and Networking with organizations throughout Canada on behalf of Liebenzell Mission.  We need to be constantly aware of service needs in the community and look for future opportunities to share Christ's love through hands-on ministry, partnering with others who seek to do the same.
  • Logistical Support - Since we will be collaborating with an established ministry, there will be many details to learn and to manage. Transportation and housing will have to be coordinated among the numerous ministry locations. The health and daily living needs of these international students will require monitoring. Spiritual health will require care. Even emergency room visits are expected!
  • Liaison with sending countries and encourage future internship placements to further the work of extending Christian love through acts of compassion and service!
The position of Student Care Coordinators will be only partially funded by the program. Your partnership through regular financial contributions to Liebenzell Mission will allow us to serve in this position. Will you consider partnering with us? Our Network of Faith will be the engine to enable these many ministries to take place. For details on how you can help, click here.
